About Postcards From Shana:
In the summer of 2009, I was thinking of how our communication has shifted so drastically in this digital age. We so rarely get “retro mail” as I like to call it, especially for no special reason other than just for the sake of doing it.
My original thought was that it would be fun to create one-of-a-kind postcards and send them to friends and family. The idea was to connect with them through this card, my own way of saying hello and to let them know that I think about them even when I am getting swept up in my busy day to day life.
But then I realized that I could also use this as a monthly creative exercise. I have never been good at keeping a daily sketchbook, so I thought this project could provide practice and deadlines. I decided in addition to my original list, to temporarily open it up to anyone that wanted to receive a card either through conversation or through Facebook.
Every month I choose a different theme and medium with the idea that it will push me to explore new mediums, or different ways of using mediums that I may not have otherwise. And because I am creating unique, one-of-a-kind cards it also becomes an exercise to expand and develop my creativity.
I currently create approximately 35 cards a month. I have enjoyed creating my postcards, and I hope everyone has enjoyed receiving them!
